SHOOTING IN NEW ZEALAND
During the past few years the New Zealand film industry
has raised its profile dramatically. Once considered
only for its stunning locations, the New Zealand film
industry is now being recognised as a force to contend
with and an industry to do business with.
New Zealand has earned its reputation as the World in
One Country - a land blessed with a diverse and adventure-filled
landscape, where every ten-kilometres promises a fresh
location and a new creative opportunity.
Until now, New Zealand has been one of the best kept
secrets in the film world. It's quite possibly the only
place on earth where, within a few hours, you can move
from sub-tropical rainforests to snowy alps, to lush
green farmland, sandy beaches, craggy coastlines, high
country sheep and cattle stations, citrus groves or
the steel and glass towers of our major cities.
Typically thought of as spectacular and unique locations,
New Zealand is now being shot for such diverse locations
as Japan, India, Scandinavia, South America, North America,
England, Ireland, Wales, the North and South Poles,
the Sahara and even Italy.
SOME KEY NEW ZEALAND FACTS AND FIGURES
New Zealand has earned its reputation as the World
in One Country - a land blessed with a diverse and adventure-filled
landscape, where every ten-kilometres promises a fresh
location and a new creative opportunity.
Seasons
New Zealand is of course in the Southern Hemisphere,
which means our seasons are opposite to the Northern
Hemisphere.
One of the great advantages of this is that you can
be shooting your new beer TVC in our summer, complete
the post, and air it at the beginning of the European
summer.
Naturally, this means our wheat and barley fields are
best in February and March, our glaciers and snowy peaks
are best to shoot in July, August and September and
beaches are best from December to March.
In New Zealand you can always be 6 months ahead of the
Northern Hemisphere seasons.
Summer is December to February,
Autumn is March through
to May, Winter is June
through to August and Spring
is September through to November
Climate
The seasons in New Zealand are the reverse of the Northern
Hemisphere. This means that crops and fruits that are
out of season in the Northern Hemisphere will often
be obtainable in New Zealand. Best time for shooting
snow sports is July-September and for shooting at the
beach, January - March.
The North Island temperatures range from around 20-30C
in the summer, to about 8-16C in the winter.
The South Island is generally cooler ranging from 18-25
in the summer, to about 0-10C in the winter.
